Hudson Boards and Commissions

The City relies on volunteer boards and commissions as part of our governmental process. For agendas and minutes from the various boards and commissions, visit our Document Library and search for the appropriate board. If you are interested in becoming a member of a Hudson board or commission, complete the application found in the Document Library and return the completed application to the Clerk of Council, Town Hall, 27 E. Main Street, Hudson, OH 44236.

Architectural & Historic Board of Review: The AHBR reviews and approves/disapproves applications for zoning certificates other than for industrial buildings in industrial zones. Issues certificates of appropriateness to construct, alter, remove or demolish structures, buildings or landmarks within any Historic District. It maintains high character of the community development and protects public health, safety, and welfare. It also follows guidelines on architectural values in architectural criteria.

Board of Zoning and Building Appeals: Applies zoning ordinances to the circumstances of the applicant. The board understands the impact of decision on adjoining property, neighbor, and community as a whole, and recognizes property rights of owner/applicant and other property owners.

Cemetery Board: Public cemeteries within the Municipality or owned by the Municipality shall be operated and maintained by the Municipality. Council shall provide for a Cemetery Board which shall advise the Municipality on cemetery matters.

Hudson Economic Growth Board

In 2006, Hudson City Council established the Hudson Economic Growth Board to help further City Council’s economic development philosophy. This philosophy includes lowering the City’s cost structure (fiscal responsibility and holding the line on taxes), removing competitive barriers (streamlining the process, ensuring fair fee structures), maintaining Hudson’s character, and establishing performance measures for economic development growth. The board’s mission is to work with City government and the community to foster free enterprise and develop a diversified, sustainable business base for Hudson, thereby ensuring a vibrant economy for the long-term benefit of Hudson’s residents, schools, and businesses. The Hudson Economic Growth Board acts as a liaison to the business community by visiting existing businesses, attracting new businesses that will enhance our community, and assisting businesses that are willing to expand in Hudson.

HCTV Advisory Committee: Assists City Council in defining goals, objectives and policies for cable television issues related to public access, subscriber complaints, and general franchise agreement matters. Members should have some knowledge of and interest in television and HCTV.

Park Board:
Advises on operation of the parks, submits annual budget, approves park expenditures, provides for conservation/recreation activities, recommends tax levies/land acquisitions, and provides lands for park activities and natural preserves.

Planning Commission: All meetings of the Commission shall be public, except as may be provided by the laws of the State of Ohio. No public building, street, boulevard, parkway, park, playground, bridge or tunnel shall be constructed or authorized to be constructed in the Municipality, nor shall any street, avenue, parkway, boulevard or alley be opened for any purpose whatsoever, nor shall any street, avenue, parkway, boulevard or alley be widened, narrowed, relocated, or its use changed or any ordinance referring to zoning or building codes or other regulations controlling the use or development of land be passed unless and until Council shall have submitted the same to the Planning Commission for report and recommendation. Any foregoing matter so referred to the Planning Commission shall be considered by the Commission at a public hearing, of which notice shall be given in the manner provided by ordinance of Council, and thereafter shall be acted upon by the Planning Commission within one hundred twenty (120) days from the date of the regular Planning Commission meeting at which the matter was accepted, unless a longer time be allowed by Council. The Planning Commission report and recommendation shall be filed with the Clerk of Council within the prescribed time. Any proposed action by Council relating to changes of zoning, building codes, or other regulations controlling the use or development of land shall require five (5) votes of Council for passage. Four (4) votes by Council shall be required to return a recommendation to the Planning Commission for further consideration, and this may be done only once. In addition to the foregoing, the Planning Commission shall be the Platting Commission of the Municipality, shall have the power and duty to review, approve, disapprove, or approve subject to conditions, all applications for zoning certificates for industrial buildings in industrial zones, and shall have such other powers as are now or may hereafter be conferred upon it by the laws of Ohio or by ordinance of Council.

Tree Commission: Consistent with other objectives, the Municipality’s goal shall be to preserve the environment through proper maintenance of the trees in the Municipality. As directed by Council, the Hudson Tree Commission shall provide guidance for the establishment and maintenance of municipal trees, shall educate Hudson citizens on the importance of proper tree care, and shall promote development of trees in the Municipality and surrounding communities.
The Commission, upon request of Council, the City Manager, and City Boards such as the Planning Commission, the Architectural and Historic Board of Review, or the Park Board, shall make recommendations on any matter concerning trees and surrounding landscape. In addition to such other powers and duties provided by Council, the Tree Commission may conduct studies and recommend policies to Council for issues involving trees in the Municipality.
