Mayor's Memorial Day Address
By Mayor William A. Currin

Veterans…Council Members…Friends & Neighbors;

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. In 1971, Our United States Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. Many Americans observe this day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. In Hudson we have been doing all of the above for as long as I can remember, for the 40 years that Debbie and I have lived in Hudson. According to our Veterans Memorial Garden Monument here in Markillie Cemetery 58 Hudsonites have given their lives, the ultimate sacrifice, in service with the United States military, most during hostile action. While we are remembering today those that did pay with their lives protecting our freedoms let us not forget the many more surviving Veterans with wounds either physical or mental in pursuit of the same.

Thanksgiving is a day when we pause to give thanks for our blessings. Memorial Day is the day we pause to give thanks to the people who died protecting our blessing and our many freedoms. If you know a Veteran, or if you see a Veteran or someone on active duty, especially today, stop, look them in the eyes, and thank them from your heart, for their service to our wonderful country. For they too, were or are willing to die if necessary protecting your freedoms.

It is incumbent upon all of us as Citizens to practice our citizenship to its fullest extent. We all enjoy the freedoms and the privileges of being free women and men. With those freedoms and privileges comes the obligation, the obligation, to individually exercise the responsibilities of those freedoms and privileges, especially the Right to Vote. Pledge to yourself and all those that we are here today in remembrance of “to never ever again miss the opportunity to exercise your freedom to VOTE!” This will be proof of the honor that we owe to our fallen heroes this Memorial Day!

May God Bless the Women & Men Serving in Our Military, My God Bless You, and May God Bless the United States of America.
Thank You!!
